Free Sample Magazine from Heyday (media)

Greetings!

Did you know that Heyday is especially noted for our California Indian Publishing program? This program celebrates Indian culture by publishing News from Native California and books on Native life; hosting Indian events; and helping provide reading material to community members who would not otherwise have access to quality Indian publications.

We are initiating an email campaign to increase News from Native California subscribership and expand our community of friends and contributors. If you are not yet a subscriber, please email nnc@heydaybooks.com to request a free sample copy of the magazine. We are an award-winning, much-loved quarterly magazine devoted entirely to California Indian culture, with lively articles on California Indian arts, history, and traditional culture; regular columns on language, books, politics, and current events; and the best calendar of Native American events throughout the state. If you are a subscriber, please consider renewing or purchasing a gift for a friend or relative. We rely on word of mouth—and forwarding of emails!—to spread the word about our publication and the wonderful services it provides, so please forward this email to anyone and everyone on your list. We need your help! And as always, we appreciate your interest and support.

Sincerely,

Margaret Dubin

Navajos move towards renewable energy (environment)

The Navajos, who operate a semi-autonomous nation covering 27,000 square miles in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, have long depended on coal as an economic mainstay for jobs and electricity. But dwindling coal deposits have many rethinking the role of coal in the Navajo Nation. As the New York Times reports, more Navajos are calling for renewable energies and eco-tourism to take a larger role in the Navajo Nation.

Healing in Two Worlds (profile)

Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord is a Native American surgeon who has been recognized for combining the world of Western medicine and traditional Navajo healing techniques. Alvord has been appointed the associate dean of student affairs for the Central Michigan University College of Medicine, but when she was a young girl, she wanted to be a teacher like her grandmother.

Suicide Prevention Resources from NCAI PRC (health)

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Policy Research Center developed a suicide prevention resource directory for AI/AN communities. That directory is attached here. Please feel free to share it with anyone who you think may be interested. NCAI also welcomes your thoughts about other resources they can add to the directory. Please contact Dr. Sahota with your recommendations. Thank you.
