Gov. Schwarzenegger last week signed an Assembly Bill into law that Vincent Armenta, tribal chairman of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, said will greatly help the Chumash, and other California tribes preserve native languages, many of which are on the brink of extinction. I am Karuk Tribal member from the Klamath and Salmon Rivers. I am from the villages of Katimiin (upper falls) and Utimiin (lower falls). I am from a family of Dance Makers. I Dance in the Brush Dance, Flower Dance, War Dance and the Pikiyavish (World Renewal) dance and participated in a Jump Dance to reclaim our Tribal land. I am a traditional gambler and singer/drummer. I am a founding member and Chair of the Karuk Language Committee. I am currently the Operations Director of the Northern California Indian Development Council (www.ncidc.org), a non-profit that meets the community development needs of American Indians throughout California. I live with my wife Wendy and son Kyle in Arcata California.
