Monday, April 19, 2010 - What Is the Tea Party?:
The original Boston Tea Party was a prelude of things to come in America. The new Tea Party is also causing a stir across the lands as the movement continues to pick up steam. There is even a chapter on the Crow reservation in Montana, home of President Obama's adopted tribe and family. Some folks categorize the movement as separatist, reactionary, and racist. But organizers continue to rally people with their message of fighting against excessive government spending, government invading our private lives, and soaring deficits. What do you think of the Tea Party? Our guest is Karmelita Plains Bull Martin (Crow), co-founder/Crow Nation Tea Party. Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - Native Youth Olympics in Alaska:
Youth from across Alaska will gather in Anchorage in the spirit of their ancestors to demonstrate their skills in the Native Youth Olympics. Nearly 400 Alaska Native youth are expected to participate in this year's games. The games are intended to provide insight into Alaska's rich cultural heritage, while promoting a healthy lifestyle. They are based on the life skills that past generations of Alaska Natives had to demonstrate. Are culturally relevant exercises the key to getting Native youth moving and thinking about their heritage? Guests will include Native Youth Olympic organizers. Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - Music Maker: TBA:
The distinctive sound of the powwow drum couldn't be sweeter during the spring time. As powwow season hits full swing, we'll bring you some of those sounds that make the dancers move. So when the drum starts to vibrate, does your heart seem to pound even harder? Tune in for our Mystery Music Maker of the Month. Thursday, April 22, 2010 - Climate Change Talks in Cochabamba:
The World People's Conference on Climate Change in Cochabamba, Bolivia will once again call attention to Mother Earth Day. Bolivian President Evo Morales is calling for a "charter of rights" for the planet. The conference aims to organize a world people's referendum on global warming, and draw up an action plan to create an international climate justice tribunal. Even if commitments are made toward these goals, and alternatives to Copenhagen are devised, what can these talks actually accomplish? Guests TBA. Friday, April 23, 2010 - Evolution of Natives in Film:
Starting in May, the Turner Classic Movies cable channel will reflect on Native American Images in Film in their weekly series called "Race and Hollywood." Each Tuesday and Thursday, films connected to the world of the Native American will be explored. As one sect of the media takes a critical look at Natives in film, what use is it to look back at some of these films which depict Natives inaccurately and in a bad light? How do these films help current day filmmakers to seize the moment? Guests include Hanay Geiogamah (Kiowa) Professor of Theater/UCLA School of Theater Film and Television.
